In a press release published on Friday, UEFA announced that it had fined Turkish club Fenerbahçe 50,000 euros and partially closed the stadium in order to punish its supporters for chanting pro-Putin during a match against the Ukrainians. Dynamo kyiv on July 27.
Fenerbahçe hosted Dynamo kyiv in the second round of Champions League qualifying. The match was won by the Ukrainians in Istanbul with a score of two goals to one. After Vitaliy Buyalskyi (57th) opened the score, several hundred Turkish supporters sang to the glory of the Russian head of state.
On social networks, these songs have been condemned by the Turkish and international community. Fenerbahçe initially apologized, before its president backpedaled and refused to apologize to Ukraine. The Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey, Vasyl Bodnar, had condemned these songs the day after the meeting.
UEFA had opened a disciplinary investigation into this misconduct, concluded today with these sanctions.
