Tyrol also wants to use a metering light on Achenseestrasse in 2025 – Bavaria

After the first use of a traffic metering light on Achenseestrasse (B 181), Tyrol wants to use the technology again in 2025. The Austrian federal state announced this on Tuesday. Details about the renewed use of the traffic lights are currently being examined and coordinated with all partners, the state reported.

The district office in Bad Tölz is also one of the partners. Overall, the metering traffic light controlled the traffic flow well, said Tölz district administrator Josef Niedermaier (Free Voters). Tyrol switched on the metering lights on four Saturdays in February and March 2024, especially to prevent alternative traffic on the busy B 181. Drivers were slowed down by traffic lights at two different points.

The Austrians want to ensure that more drivers drive south on the Inntal motorway. The measure affects drivers from Bavaria when they travel from Tegernsee or Lenggries towards Achensee in Austria.

According to the authorities, notice boards were put up on the German side of the Autobahn 8 at the exit near Holzkirchen with the appeal to continue using the highway and not to drive on the B 181. On busy weekends, Austrians have so far registered around 16,500 vehicles a day on Achenseestrasse. Due to the dosage, around 1,000 fewer vehicles were counted at the Achenkirch permanent counting point on Carnival Saturday this year than on the same day last year, the state reported.

Tyrol had previously used metering traffic lights in other places to regulate traffic caused by tourism. This is intended to relieve residents and holidaymakers of through traffic.
