Typhoon reaches China: schools and stock exchange in Hong Kong closed

Typhoon “Kompasu” has reached China. In Hong Kong it sometimes brought a standstill to public life. The storm is expected to move south to Hainan in China and Vietnam.

Typhoon “Kompasu” brought public life to a standstill in Hong Kong. Classes at schools were canceled, trading on the stock exchange was discontinued and administrative services were no longer carried out. Authorities warned of heavy rains. They could cause flooding in low-lying areas. Local residents should take precautionary measures.

The typhoon brought sustained wind speeds of 83 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 101 kilometers per hour. In the afternoon the winds should subside, it was said.

Typhoon continues south

The typhoon is expected to continue across the northern part of the South China Sea towards China’s Hainan Province and Vietnam.

As a tropical storm, “Kompasu” had previously caused landslides and flash floods in the Philippines. At least eleven people died.
