A two-year-old girl drowned in a river during the festival in the small village of Villembits, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, during the night from Saturday to Sunday, we learned from the gendarmes on Monday. After escaping the vigilance of her family, the little girl found herself with her stroller in the Bouès, a river that crosses the village.
Despite the intervention of several people, the child could not be rescued in time, due to the current and the depth of the river. Firefighters and gendarmes, dispatched to the scene, were unable to revive her.
The “very shocked” mother
“Unfortunately I was not present, I was notified at 3:00 am, and I was immediately there. But it was too late. The firefighters were there, the gendarmes, the stroller had been fished out, but the little girl had unfortunately died, ”said the mayor of Villembits, Henry Lacoste, to an AFP correspondent.
The child’s mother, “very shocked, was transported to Lannemezan hospital by firefighters. It’s a dramatic story (…) It was supposed to be a party, and it’s a disaster, ”he added.
An investigation was opened to determine the circumstances of the tragedy and entrusted to the research brigade of the company of Tarbes, with the support of the research section of Toulouse.
