In the beginning there was the drawing. This applies to all of Kiki Smith’s work. But what she creates from it is a whole cosmos of arts: prints, engravings, tapestries, stained glass, mosaics, paintings, videos, sculptures and frottages, which in turn have been rubbed off of these sculptures. The circle then closes from the surface, which blossoms into a three-dimensional form and returns to the surface again. This is a bit like the circle of life itself, which also leads in eternal transformation from lying in the cradle to lying on the bier.
