Twitter boss Elon Musk had the lettering painted over at Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco. With that, he instructed a name change to “Titter”. At first glance, the action seems harmless, but behind it is probably a targeted provocation.

Shortly after Elon Musk took over Twitter in October 2022, the tech billionaire initiated significant changes in the company. He fired numerous employees – including the executive floor – he sold various items of furniture and just last week he promptly changed the logo. Instead of the blue bird, Twitter suddenly had the symbol of the digital currency Dogecoin, a dog.

Musk has now changed the lettering at Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco. Because he had the “w” painted over so that only “Titter” should appear there. This shows a photo that the Twitter boss published in a tweet on Easter Monday. Musk wrote: “Our landlord at the San Francisco HQ says we are required by law to keep the Twitter shield and not remove the ‘W’ so we painted it the background color. Problem solved!”

A Twitter user had previously published a photo of the company building showing the changed lettering. The tweet from last Thursday was clicked around six million times on Twitter.

Musk has been thinking about changing the name of the short message service for some time. A year ago, he had Twitter users vote on whether exactly that “W” in the name should be deleted.

Twitter boss Elon Musk in dispute with building landlord

This time, Musk actually changes the lettering at the company’s headquarters. And there is probably more to it than just a gag. Because Musk has been at odds with the landlord of the building, SRI Nine Market Square LLC, for a long time. In January, the landlord sued Twitter for allegedly unpaid rent. According to this, the company around the tech billionaire is said to have not paid the monthly rent of around 3.4 million US dollars for the company building in December 2022 and January 2023.

Last week, Musk swapped the blue bird, Twitter’s usual logo, for a dog. After several days, Twitter got the bird back, but the digital currency Dogecoin, for which the dog stands, is controversial. Today’s Twitter boss had made her better known through several tweets. The stock price rallied briefly before crashing. An investor then filed a lawsuit against Musk, accusing him of being part of an illegal Ponzi scheme. The Dogecoin price was first pushed up and then dropped. The logo exchange last week caused the share of the digital currency to rise again briefly. Even with the “name change” it should not be a permanent change. Still, it shows that Musk can make changes to the platform practically at will.
