A sharp look at society is well received: This year’s Emmy nominations are dominated by series that take on families, the media and celebrities with dark humor.

The Netflix world success “Squid Game” from South Korea and the US series “Succession” have good chances in the race for the most coveted television award in the world.

Both series were nominated several times for the Emmy Award in Los Angeles on Tuesday, including in the top category of best drama series. «Squid Game» is a black satire about game shows. “Succession” (in Germany on Sky) is about a media mogul and his scheming heirs. Actors from both series also have hope for an award.

With a total of 25 nominations, “Succession” clearly leads the field, including 14 nominations for acting performances in leading roles, supporting parts and guest appearances. The teenage drama “Euphoria” (Sky) has 16 nominations, “Squid Game” has 14, as has the working world satire “Severance” (Apple TV+).

The other nominations for best drama series are “Better Call Saul”, “Ozark”, “Stranger Things” (all three Netflix) and “Yellowjackets” (Sky). Last year’s winner “The Crown” (Netflix) cannot be selected this year because no new season had appeared.

One of the favorites in the comedy categories is Abbott Elementary (previously only available on ABC in the US), a warm-hearted series about the teachers of a Philadelphia public school. Last year’s winner, the football comedy “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+), the Las Vegas tragic comedy “Hacks” (HBO) about an aging comedian and the black humorous hitman series “Barry” (Sky) also received several nominations, each also as best comedy series. “Ted Lasso” has 20 nominations for its second season, making it the leader in these categories.

In addition to the holiday satire “The White Lotus” (HBO/Sky), which has been nominated 20 times, the mini-series are mainly based on real events, including series on actress Pamela Anderson, the fraudster Anna Delvey and the failed medicine start-up. up Theranos.

Among the television shows, the long-running hit “Saturday Night Live” has again cleared up – the sketch show has had 315 nominations in its history and has won 86 Emmys so far. Among the best late night shows, John Oliver, Jimmy Kimmel and Trevor Noah, among others, can hope for an Emmy.

Winners in the major Emmy categories will be announced at a gala in Los Angeles on September 12th, with awards in minor and creative categories such as costume and editing being presented on September 3rd and 4th.
