An earthquake shakes parts of Tuscany. According to initial findings, however, there are no injuries – and only minor damage.

In Italy is a A magnitude 3.7 earthquake was recorded. The epicenter of the quake on Wednesday afternoon was near the central Italian town of Poggibonsi in the Tuscany region, the authorities said.

According to the first findings of the Italian civil defense, there were no injuries or fatalities. The quake was also clearly felt in the nearby cities of Florence and Siena. Many people had therefore left their homes and ran onto the streets, as reported by the media.

Plaster fell off the facade of the well-known Baptistery (Battistero di San Giovanni) of Siena Cathedral as a result of the shaking. In order to examine any further damage, the cathedral had to be evacuated. The cathedral was able to resume regular operations after a few hours. Also, as a precautionary measure, some streets in the historic center of the city have been closed to cars and pedestrians.

“The earthquake was clearly felt by the citizens, but the first checks have not revealed any damage so far. The checks in schools and buildings are continuing,” wrote the regional president of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, on Facebook.
