Türkiye: Erdoğan appoints new governor of the Turkish central bank – Politics

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has appointed Deputy Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan as Turkey’s new Central Bank Governor. The country announced this in an official gazette early Saturday morning. Karahan’s appointment came just hours after Central Bank Governor Hafize Gaye Erkan announced her resignation via X on Friday night after less than eight months. She herself gave personal reasons for her resignation, although there were allegations of nepotism against her.

Erdoğan had already appointed Karahan as one of the three new deputy governors of the central bank in July last year. The 42-year-old Karahan studied economics in the USA and previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank (Fed) of New York. He also worked as a senior economist for Amazon in 2022.
