The tropical storm “Kompasu” swept over parts of the Philippines and triggered landslides and floods. Several people died in the process. The storm is expected to continue towards Hainan in China.

At least nine people died in heavy rains in the Philippines. The national civil protection agency announced that eleven other people have been missing so far. The tropical storm “Kompasu” flooded villages in large parts of the populous island of Luzon on Monday and triggered landslides.

The provinces of Benguet and Cagayan on the main island of Luzon and the island province of Palawan in the west were affected. More than 1,600 people were taken from their homes in several cities and brought to safety. There were power outages, major highways and bridges were flooded.

Tropical storm continues towards China

According to the local weather department, the tropical storm “Kompasu” had gusts of up to 125 kilometers per hour, especially over the north of the Southeast Asian island state. The authority warned of further flooding and possible landslides due to heavy rains in the region. “Kompasu” is expected to move from the Philippines to Hainan in China, it said.

The Philippines is hit by an average of around 20 storms and typhoons each year. The crops, houses and infrastructure in already structurally weak areas are regularly destroyed.

In November 2020, almost 70 people were killed in the tropical storm “Vamco”. The worst typhoon “Haiyan” to date had killed more than 6,300 people in November 2013. More than four million people had to flee.
