For more than 13 years, the US singer Spears was under the tutelage of her father. After a month-long process, a court has now overturned this. “This is the best day of my life,” commented Spears on the verdict.

A US court revoked the 13-year guardianship of the US singer Britney Spears. “The guardianship of the person and property of Britney Spears is hereby terminated,” said Judge Brenda Penny at a court hearing in Los Angeles.

Guardianship has been criticized for years

“I think I’ll cry the rest of the day! This is the best day of my life,” Spears wrote on Instagram. In front of the courthouse, her fans, who have long been campaigning for the pop star under the motto “Free Britney” (Liberated Britney), celebrated the end of guardianship with loud cheers and pink confetti.

The judge had already deposed Spears’ father Jamie as guardian in September. The entire guardianship, which had come under increasing criticism in recent years, has now been ended. From now on, the musician will be able to make decisions about her private life, her career and her finances again.

Disenfranchised in 2008 due to mental health problems

The singer, who had already conquered the worldwide charts in her teenage years with hits like “Baby One More Time” and “Toxic”, was temporarily forcibly admitted to a clinic in 2008 due to psychological problems and subsequently incapacitated.

Her father then took over the guardianship of his daughter and thus, in addition to managing her personal interests, also took control of her property. Most recently he was only responsible for financial matters.

“I want my life back”

Critics accused the father of exploiting his daughter. Spears herself complained in a highly emotional statement in June that she was “traumatized” and “depressed”: “I just want my life back.”

According to her lawyer Mathew Rosengart, “a safety net” is now being set up to protect the musician’s financial and personal decisions. The money manager John Zabel, appointed by Spears to replace her father, will continue to take care of the finances of the singer, whose net worth is estimated at around $ 60 million.
