Two years ago, two S-Bahn trains collided head-on in Schäftlarn, Upper Bavaria, killing one person and injuring 51 others. Now the train driver of one of the railways is on trial.

It was “inexplicable to him that I made such mistakes,” he said on Monday in front of the Munich district court. “It was actually a normal day shift.” In the accident on Valentine’s Day 2022, a 24-year-old man was killed and, according to the prosecution, 51 people were also injured.

In addition to negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm, the public prosecutor’s office also accuses the man of intentionally endangering rail traffic. According to the investigation, the train driver ignored signals. His train collided with an oncoming S-Bahn. Accordingly, the man had ignored emergency braking and ignored a stop signal.
