Nørrebro in Copenhagen named the coolest neighborhood in the world
The pandemic-related travel regulations are loosening, the next city trip is coming up – but where to? “Time Out” has chosen the 49 coolest neighborhoods in the world.
The British magazine “Time Out” surveyed 27,000 city dwellers and their editors on site to find out where the coolest parts of the city are in the world. They presented the results for the third time in a ranking with a total of 49 districts.
Ranking according to new criteria
In the current ranking, however, different criteria were used than before the pandemic. Nightlife, culture and eating out are still important – but now also a feeling of community, resilience and sustainability, according to “Time Out”.
“In 2020 and 2021, our cities have developed well. Despite all the adversities, people have come together, done something and created something. They displayed the same energy, resilience and ingenuity as they did in the first place They survived, “write the authors.
Vacation in Europe: Nørrebro in Copenhagen in first place
“Whichever way you define ‘cool’, Nørrebro has it”, writes “Time Out” about the area in the Danish capital. Nørrebro offers “a dazzling mix of historical sights, ultra-modern architecture and dining options.” Despite Corona, the district is flourishing: New bakeries, restaurants and natural wine bars with a focus on local, seasonal products have emerged. The car-free Sundays on Nørrebrogade make the street the setting for live music and flea markets. The new interactive art exhibition Usynlige Stier (“Invisible Paths”) aims to liven up the disadvantaged corners of the district.
For the authors, a perfect day in Nørrebro starts with a coffee and the best croissant in town from the Rondo bakery, which they enjoy outdoors in the Assistens Kirkegård cemetery, the final resting place of Hans Christian Andersen. This is followed by a visit to Jægersborggade, where you can buy sustainable household goods, second-hand fashion and Nordic skin care products. To end the day, the authors recommend a dinner in the Silberbauers Bistro and a nightcap in The Barking Dog.
Neukölln is the only German quarter in the ranking
Neighborhoods in Chigago (Andersonville), Seoul (Jongno 3-ga) and Vilnius (Station District) also made it into the top ten of the ranking. Ngor in the Senegalese capital Dakar is one of them, which the authors describe as “a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with bougainvillea, golden sandy bays, unmistakable street art and unique architecture”.
Just past the top ten, Neukölln in Berlin shines in eleventh place as the only German district in the ranking. “No district captures the dynamics of modern Berlin better than Neukölln,” write the authors. In addition to a wide range of culinary options, the district is characterized by a multicultural atmosphere. In addition, the district is an epicenter for protests and demonstrations against racism and for affordable housing.
