But this morning it just doesn’t matter. The Railjet 19089 is available on platform five at the main station for a special trip where no one has to worry about their connecting train. And with that, welcome to the maiden voyage of the new Railjet generation from Munich to Verona!

The country needs new trains – who would dispute that? Anyone who has ever tried to travel far away by rail instead of the motorway at the start of their holidays will certainly agree with this. So it’s good that something is happening, especially towards Austria and Italy: From Monday onwards, traveling south will now be more convenient and comfortable, because then the route from Munich via Rosenheim, Innsbruck, Bolzano, Verona to Bologna and in the opposite direction The new generation Railjet trains are in use. A “trip at ICE level” is promised. As more trains are delivered, the five EuroCity trains that run every day will gradually run with the new vehicles.

“Cross-border rail traffic is booming,” says Klaus-Dieter Josel, Deutsche Bahn’s representative for Bavaria, “between Germany and Austria alone the number of travelers has increased by 50 percent in the last five years.” 27 new trains were ordered for 6.3 billion euros, which should provide around 100,000 additional seats. It’s “not just about more connections to other European countries,” says Josel, “but also about a noticeable increase in quality and comfort.”

And you can see that on the inside of the Railjet. A few numbers: The new one can reach speeds of up to 230 kilometers per hour, is 238 meters long and instead of 497 passengers, it now has space for 532, of which 430 are in second class, 86 in first class, 16 in business class and twelve in Onboard restaurant. The new generation consists of nine cars, seven of which have low-floor entry, which means wheelchair users and passengers with large suitcases, strollers or bicycles can board more comfortably. Barrier-free travel is also made easier by three wheelchair spaces in the so-called multi-functional carriage and tactile and high-contrast equipment.

Sometimes the innovations are only centimeters in size and yet make so many things easier. This means you can push bikes up a narrow ramp next to the steps instead of having to heave them up with Herculean strength; A clever lock is also ensured. There are also holders for skis and snowboards; after all, you are driving through Tyrol and South Tyrol. The same applies to luggage: Instead of lifting suitcases above head height, you can push luggage under the raised seats in the so-called raised seating area; Luggage storage and security have also been improved.

The dark red seats are also adjustable in second class and are now seamless, which ensures more privacy. Also: two folding tables per seat, footrest and reading lamp. Another plus: improved WiFi thanks to mobile radio-permeable windows as well as charging options via USB and inductive charging stations. The air conditioning is also energy efficient, thanks to the heat pump. Also new: three vending machines for snacks and hot and cold drinks. For four euros, the hungry guest can get a sandwich “Oven Leberkäs, Essiggurkerl & Egg” or the variant “Vegan Kebap, Kraut & Tomatoes”, a Snickers costs 2.40 euros.

Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter sees the fleet change as “a quantum leap in international north-south traffic between our economically and culturally closely interconnected regions.” Well then, have a good trip into the Italian spring!
