Traunstein: After permission to shoot – dispute over wolf escalates – Bavaria

The government has released an animal in the district of Traunstein for shooting, it would be the first legal killing of a wolf in Bavaria for 140 years. But conservationists are announcing lawsuits – and many practical questions remain unanswered.

The hunt is said to be open from this Monday, but the reactions to the announced shooting of a wolf in the Traunstein region could hardly be more controversial. District Administrator Siegfried Walch (CSU), who requested the shooting, says he is “happy” about the decision. He is convinced that the wolf is a danger to sheep and other livestock on the pastures in the region. But above all for the people, because he also hunted near farms. “The wolf was seen in the middle of a populated area,” says Walch. “This is not something to be taken lightly.” The district administrator can be sure that his position will meet with great approval – especially among the farmers.
