BVB star fuels transfer rumors

Borussia Dortmund will be without their strongest player at the weekend. Donyell Malen is missing the away game against Union Berlin due to a yellow card suspension. But is the Dutchman perhaps already further along in his thoughts?

BVB coach Edin Terzic seemed optimistic. “We will now have to do without him for a game, but we can manage it,” analyzed the 41-year-old at the press conference before the game at Union Berlin, when asked about Donyell Malen’s yellow card suspension (Saturday, 3:30 p.m., SPORT1-LIVE TICKER).

Terzic referred to the alternatives in this wing position: Karim Adeyemi, Julien Duranville and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens were available.

But just a look at the numbers shows that painting has been indispensable for BVB in the past few weeks. With ten goals and two assists, he is the most accurate BVB player so far this season behind Niclas Füllkrug (eleven goals, seven assists) and the team’s third-best scorer behind Julian Brandt (six goals, eight assists). For comparison: The so-called “alternatives” total six goal participations.

Will Malen remain loyal to BVB?

Above all, thanks to his form in the last games this calendar year (seven goals in seven competitive games), the 25-year-old was the guarantee that BVB would at least be in a relatively solid position in terms of points – although the team’s playful development was lacking.

The Dutchman also ensured that the critical voices against Terzic are only now becoming loud again. But how long will Malen remain with BVB?

In an interview with the Dutch portal Voetbalzone the 25-year-old enthused about the Premier League: “Since I played in England as a youth, it’s a nice dream to play in the Premier League again.”

Painting in the Premier League?

His former club Arsenal FC is considered Malen’s favorite club. The 25-year-old played for the Gunners’ U18 and U23 teams between 2015 and 2017 before moving to Eindhoven.

A request from England would probably give the offensive player pause – and that wouldn’t be the first time.

After a slight dip in form before Christmas, the 25-year-old was suddenly no longer Terzic’s first choice and often had to sit on the bench. Spicy at the time: At the end of November he changed his advisor and the first interested parties promptly came forward. Above all, Manchester United inquired about the 28-time Dutch international. But then came the turnaround and painting was convincing.

One thing is certain: the offensive player arouses desire. As Turkish transfer expert Ekrem Konur reported on X, even FC Bayern is said to be interested. After SPORT1-Information is currently not a big issue in Dortmund or Munich.

BVB upheaval with Malen money?

Malen’s contract runs until the summer of 2026. In order to sign Malen, a club would probably have to put around 35 to 40 million euros on the table.

Money that BVB could use to shape the upcoming upheaval. Five contracts, including those of Marco Reus and Mats Hummels, expire in the summer. New commitments are inevitable.

But what would BVB be without its strongest player? The fans will receive their first small answer on Saturday at Union Berlin.
