Drugs make road traffic less safe. But after a beer you can often still drive. Experts also recommend something like a blood alcohol limit for cannabis. This should now get underway.

Accompanying the partial legalization of Cannabis should also be set a limit for the active ingredient THC in road traffic. According to a report in the “Augsburger Allgemeine”, there is now a first draft of a legal regulation that is intended to implement the recommendations of a commission of experts.

Anyone driving a motor vehicle with 3.5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood or more is committing an administrative offense. The limit is to be implemented by a law passed by the traffic light coalition factions in the Bundestag.

So far, the strict line that has applied to cannabis is that simply detecting the active ingredient can result in fines or points. There is no limit like the 0.5 per mille alcohol limit. However, a low value of 1 nanogram has been established in case law. At the end of March, a commission from the Federal Ministry of Transport recommended a limit of 3.5 nanograms. Then “a traffic safety-relevant effect when driving a motor vehicle is not remote”. This is comparable to an alcohol concentration of 0.2 per mille.
