Numerous accidents caused by hail and rain
Heavy rain and hail have led to traffic accidents in parts of Germany. The A5 in Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia was particularly affected.
The material damage amounts to around 250,000 euros. There were both collisions between several vehicles and accidents with only one car involved, it said. The A5 was initially completely closed after the accidents, but according to the police spokesman it was reopened in the morning.
Mass pile-up in North Rhine-Westphalia
Due to hail and heavy rain, there was a mass collision on Autobahn 2 in North Rhine-Westphalia with nine people injured. According to police, a 29-year-old was critically injured in the accident. A police spokesman said in the morning that he was driving his car too fast for the weather conditions on Wednesday evening. Between Oelde and Herzebrock-Clarholz he hit another car and further collisions occurred. According to the spokesman, a total of 14 vehicles were involved in the accident.
Eight other people were injured, police said. How severe was not initially known. The section of the highway was completely closed until early Thursday morning at around 4:30 a.m.
