Traffic lights on the access ramps to regulate traffic on the ring road

Rennes was in September 2021 the most congested city in France, according to a ranking established by the magazine Auto More. Since then, it has of course demoted and given way to much larger cities like Paris, Marseille or Bordeaux. The fact remains that traffic is still galley on the ring road with significant traffic jams during peak hours.

To prevent buses from getting stuck in traffic jams, a first lane reserved for public transport was set up at the start of the year on the emergency lane of the RN137 between Noyal-Châtillon-sur-Seiche and the Alma gate. After some work, it will soon be able to be used by carpooling vehicles.

Incoming vehicles stopped if the ring road is saturated

Other measures are also in the pipeline to try to ease traffic on the Rennes ring road. As is already the case on the Nantes ring road, traffic lights will thus appear on the access ramps. The principle is quite simple: if traffic is saturated, incoming vehicles will be stopped by a red light and held for a few moments.

The work to install the first traffic light will take place this summer at Porte de Bréquigny with commissioning scheduled for the start of the school year, we learned from the Interdepartmental Roads Directorate (Diro) of the West. Two other sectors will also be equipped with traffic lights, one between the gates of Lorient and Saint-Nazaire and the other between the gates of Beaulieu and Angers.
