Traffic light crisis: A coalition break would be a rare historical exception – politics

Parts of the FDP base are calling for an exit from the traffic lights, the CSU leader is giving the floor to a grand coalition. In the history of the Federal Republic, coalition breaks are rare – but they all had their own script.

This letter is now part of the history of the traffic light coalition. Around 25 local and state politicians from the FDP issued a “wake-up call for freedom!” demanded that the Liberals’ exit from the traffic lights be examined. “The FDP is perceived as a party that has become an accomplice to a policy that is rejected by 70 percent of the population,” says the letter to the board, ministers and parliamentary group of the FDP. From citizens’ money to the nuclear phase-out to migration, the FDP is bending itself beyond recognition. “It is precisely this fact that the voters are rightly punishing.”
