At one point Lars Klingbeil has to wipe the sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief; these are not the easiest days in the life of an SPD party leader. They have just given each other courage at the board meeting with the Chancellor up in the Willy Brandt House, decided that a ban on the AfD is now an option and that the weakening economy should be supported. Above all, the ranks around Chancellor Olaf Scholz and parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich are closing. For some in the SPD, the coalition partners’ attacks have reached a limit.
