Traffic jams and protests: A country stands still – Commentary – Economy

Trains and tractors give train drivers and farmers a special power that other professional groups do not have: blockade power. You should therefore consider more carefully whether you actually use them.

Germany hasn’t been this quiet for a long time. The train drivers went on strike for three whole days. In long-distance transport, only one in five trains was running, and a large number of trains were also canceled in regional transport. Then came the farmers. They blocked city centers and highway entrances all week long. Convoys of tractors caused kilometer-long traffic jams everywhere in Germany. In Brandenburg, entire cities were temporarily sealed off. The farmers’ uprising in turn brought truck drivers and craftsmen to the scene, who also joined the protest parade with trucks and vans. On Friday, hundreds of trucks headed to Munich’s Theresienwiese and clogged city traffic.
