Traffic in Neuperlach: Carl-Wery-Straße is to be redesigned – Munich

Carl-Wery-Straße on the southern city limits has recently been a kind of permanent construction site access road. By 2020, Gewofag had built almost 400 apartments and a crèche south of the Neuperlach Süd train station, while on the other side of the street a hotel and later a 17-story boarding house with retail on the ground floor were built. In addition, the new building for the city’s vocational school for color and design is currently growing – as is a parking garage with 770 parking spaces, which, according to the municipal utilities, will open in early 2024.

This brisk construction activity has also had an impact on traffic on Carl-Wery-Straße, where cars and buses often pile up, not only at peak times. This is one of the reasons why the city is now planning to expand and renovate the site. The building committee set the course for this in 2016 when it approved a requirements program with a cost cap of eleven million euros. As a result, however, the construction of the parking garage had to be waited for, as an interim parking space was created on part of Carl-Wery-Straße, which in turn is needed for the renovation.

Now it should start: According to the project description that the building department sent to the Ramersdorf-Perlach district committee, the preparatory work will begin in mid-2024. The expansion and renovation is scheduled to follow in spring 2025 – subject to the city council’s approval.

According to the building department, the plans provide for “an extensive redesign of the public traffic areas” on Carl-Wery-Straße. The green islands between the lanes between Neuperlach Süd train station and Therese-Giehse-Allee are to be removed and replaced by a bus lane. This route could one day also be used for a city-surrounding railway, although the timing of its implementation is uncertain, according to the construction department.

In addition, the sidewalks on both sides of the street should be widened and cycle paths that correspond to the cycling decision should be created. The same is planned further south to Arnold-Sommerfeld-Straße. Carl-Wery-Strasse is to become four lanes here; In addition, the bus lane will be continued. It only ends at Arnold-Sommerfeld-Straße, where there will only be a sidewalk on the west side “due to a lack of space.” The cycle path, on the other hand, should run on both sides of the street up to the city limits.

According to the draft, around 50 trees will have to be felled for the renovation; At the same time, there are plans to plant almost 100 new trees. The building department is currently not providing any information on the question of how long the redesign of Carl-Wery-Straße will take and what consequences it will have on traffic. Possible closures and diversions would first have to be coordinated with the mobility department.
