“We fight intensively against brokers of fake reviews”: The online giant shuts down several websites that offered fake reviews for products.

According to its own statement, the US group Amazon has stopped several websites with fake reviews. Since the company took legal action against providers of fake reviews in Germany in 2018, 40 relevant websites have either stopped their activities on Amazon or gone offline. This was announced by the German Amazon subsidiary in Munich.

Globally, by the end of May this year alone, Amazon had taken legal action against 94 “malicious actors,” including providers of fake reviews in the US, China and Europe. That’s what Dharmesh Mehta, vice president of Amazon’s business with online retailers, wrote in a blog post on the company’s website. “We fight intensively against brokers of fake reviews.”

In a “concept for a public-private partnership”, Amazon is calling on governments and the judiciary internationally to take stricter action against providers of fake reviews. “In some countries, governments should introduce enforcement powers or stronger enforcement tools to punish fake reviewers,” Mehta wrote. “In countries with laws or regulations against the submission of fake reviews, we think regulators should do more to use their existing enforcement powers to effectively crack down on providers of fake reviews.”
