Hardly anyone embodies the dilemma of the German economy in dealing with China as much as Angela Titzrath. As head of the Hamburg port operator HHLA, she has to keep the largest German port in international competition, and that is only possible in cooperation with China: around a third of the containers handled by HHLA come from there or are to be shipped there. On the other hand, the 56-year-old has to justify herself in public if she wants to tie the Chinese state shipping company Cosco even more closely to Hamburg through a terminal stake.
