The German hockey men started the World Cup tournament in India with the expected victory. The two-time world champion defeated outsiders Japan 3-0 (0-0) in the first game of Group B.

In the almost sold-out 15,000-seater stadium in Bhubaneswar, team captain Mats Grambusch (35th minute), goalscorer Christopher Ruhr (40th) and Thies Ole Prinz (48th) scored the goals for the German team.

In the second group game, the DHB selection meets Belgium on Tuesday (2:30 p.m. / DAZN). The world champion defeated South Korea 5-0 (0-0) in his opening game. Only the first of the four groups of four qualifies directly for the quarter-finals, the second and third play in a “crossover” round four more participants.
