Tourist damages Colosseum in Rome: what not to do on vacation

First Bali and Mallorca, now Italy too? The behavior of some vacationers has recently left a lot to be desired. Since we have been able to travel again and mass tourism has made a real comeback, complaints from residents of popular holiday destinations about their visitors have increased.

While we’re already used to the binge drinking on the Spanish holiday island of Mallorca, and after the Indonesian holiday island of Bali made headlines for weeks with unabashed tourists, a young man is causing a stir in Italy.

Tourist damages the Colosseum in Rome

The tourist used a key to carve his girlfriend’s name into a wall of the Colosseum in Rome – and is therefore now wanted by the government. He faces a hefty fine. A few years ago, for example, a Russian tourist who had scratched something on a wall in the Colosseum had to pay a fine of 20,000 euros. According to media reports, should the still unknown tourist be tracked down, he could face a similarly high penalty.

The Roman landmark, which is around 2000 years old, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy and is considered the symbol of the Eternal City. It was built in the 1st century AD and is considered the largest amphitheater in the world. In ancient Rome, gladiator races and sometimes cruel and brutal fights took place in it. The Colosseum attracts millions of visitors every year.
