Tourism: These are the ten most annoying types of vacationers

After the Corona years, the travel industry is booming. Many popular holiday destinations are more overrun this year than ever before. This goes hand in hand with the headlines and discussions about the negative effects of mass tourism. Only recently did the lagoon city of Venice announce the long-promised fee for day tourists. From next year, guests will have to pay five euros entry on the 30 busiest days of the year.

In Amsterdam and many places in Spain too, people are tired of the large number of (misbehaving) holidaymakers. While the Dutch capital is primarily taking action against drinking tourists, people in Spain are bothered by the sheer number of visitors. In many places there are protest demonstrations by local residents. The locals often even come up with actions to scare away, scare away or mislead tourists.

Tourism researchers find out which vacationers annoy the most

Many tourists are certainly unjustly victims of such campaigns. But there are enough holidaymakers who are stirring up discontent. In June, the story of a young man who carved his girlfriend’s name into the wall of the Roman Colosseum made the rounds. In US national parks, such as Yellowstone, there are always visitors who get too close to the wild animals – and either get injured themselves or endanger the animals. Late last year, a woman in Mexico was briefly arrested for illegally climbing a Mayan pyramid and dancing. Binge drinking, rubbish in the Mediterranean and selfies at any price – the list is almost endless.

New Zealand tourism researchers have conducted a study to find out which types of tourists annoy locals the most. To do this, the scientists evaluated over 2,000 posts from the “Reddit” forum and used them to identify the ten most annoying types of vacationers. The results, which the researchers published last year in the “International Journal of Tourism Research”, can also be seen as a guide for rules of etiquette: If you want to show respect to the holiday destination and not be among the inglorious top ten, you should hate these ten Avoid behaviors at all costs.
