Professional cyclist Sepp Kuss has mastered the last tough test of the Tour of Spain and is on the verge of the greatest success of his career.

The American from the Jumbo-Visma team finished the penultimate stage in the favorites group and is 17 seconds ahead of his Danish teammate Jonas Vingegaard before the final kilometers to Madrid on Sunday. Third is Primoz Roglic, also from the Dutch team, 1:08 minutes back.

It would be the first time that a racing team wins all three major national tours in one year. Roglic triumphed at the Giro d’Italia in May, Vingegaard at the Tour de France in July. The trio crossed the finish line arm in arm with a kiss in the middle.

The Dutchman Wout Poels won the demanding 20th stage to Guadarrama. The climbing specialist beat Remco Evenepoel in a sprint from a leading group of five. The defending champion from Belgium, who actually wanted to fight for the overall victory, will win the mountain jersey when he reaches Madrid on Sunday. Lennard Kämna, part of the day’s breakaway group, finished eighth.
