Tour de France: Mark Cavendish crashes on the eighth stage and has to give up – record hunt ended

Cavendish had competed in the 110th Tour de France in order to become the sole record holder of the Tour of France with his 35th stage win. On Friday he narrowly missed out on this victory in Bordeaux as he was second on the day because his gear shifting caused problems in the sprint.

Cavendish now has 34 Tour stage wins and shares this record with Belgian cycling icon Eddy Merckx. At the end of the season, Cavendish announced at a specially scheduled press conference at the Giro d’Italia in May that the Briton will end his professional career, which began in 2007 with the T-Mobile team.
