Tour de France 2023 – General classification: Vingegaard in yellow, Pogacar just 25 seconds behind

The big winner of these Pyrenees? Suspense. We feared after the first opus on Wednesday towards Laruns that Jonas Vingegaard was ready to kill the suspense from this first week, but Tadej Pogacar’s reply on Thursday in Cauterets revived everything. Winner of the stage ahead of his great rival whom he left behind on the last climb, the Slovenian reduced his handicap by half: 53 seconds on Thursday morning, only 25 at the end of this 6th stage.

Behind, the gaps widen. Jai Hindley only kept his yellow jersey for 24 hours. The Australian gives up his tunic to Jonas Vingegaard, less dashing than the day before but now in command of the general classification. He limited the breakage but still finds himself more than a minute and a half behind the Dane of the Jumbo-Visma. On the other hand, he already has a 1’40” margin over his first pursuer, Simon Yates and therefore settles comfortably on the podium.

The first French are even further. Unsurprisingly, they are David Gaudu and Romain Bardet. They are more than four minutes from the lead, but they still climb in the hierarchy, respectively to 7th and 8th place. After this first phase of the Tour which ends with the exit from the Pyrenees on Friday, they are still in contention for the Top 5, even on the podium.
