At the Tony Awards this year, a musical dominates the nomination list: “A Strange Loop” has eleven chances of winning a prize.

This year, the musical “A Strange Loop” by author and composer Michael R. Jackson (41) is at the top of the list of nominations for the Tony Awards. According to the description, the play is about an usher who dreams of a show about himself and his everyday life as a “queer black man” in the theater business. The show previously won a Pulitzer Prize in 2020 and is now nominated for 11 Tonys.

Also successful musical about Michael Jackson

Directly behind are the musicals “MJ”, a jukebox musical about Michael Jackson (1958-2009), and “Paradise Square”, a play about the conscription riots in Manhattan in the 1960s. Both have received ten nominations each. Out of plays, “The Lehman Trilogy” received the most recognition: the drama about one of the financial institutions that triggered the 2008 recession has eight nominations.

Other notable musicals include Company, a reinterpretation of the Stephen Sondheim classic, which received nine nominations, and Six, a feminist retelling of the story of Henry VIII’s six wives, which received eight nominations.

Competing in the top category “Best Play” are: “Clyde’s”, “Hangmen”, “The Lehman Trilogy”, “The Minutes” and “Skeleton Crew”. Competing for Best Musical: “Girl From The North Country”, “MJ”, “Mr. Saturday Night”, “Paradise Square”, “Six: The Musical” and “A Strange Loop”.

These Hollywood stars are nominated

Some Hollywood stars could also be happy about a Tony this year. Including Hugh Jackman (53), who was nominated for his role as an impostor in “The Music Man”. Ruth Negga (40) was recognized for her role as the villain in “MacBeth”. Billy Crystal (74) is honored with a nomination for his work as a star and author of “Mr. Saturday Night”. Mary-Louise Parker (57) could also win another Tony for her role in “How I Learned To Drive”.

The Tony Awards are considered the Oscars of the theater and musical scene, but only consider plays performed in a Broadway theater. The awards will be presented on June 12th. Ariana DeBose (31), who has just received an Oscar for her role in “West Side Story”, will lead the event.
