Tons of food thrown away after a fire in a Leclerc supermarket

It all started with the start of a fire that occurred on Sunday January 22 in a technical room in the Leclerc Sud center, in La Roche-sur-Yon (Vendée). Since that date, the supermarket has been deprived of a large part of its fridges. Consequence: impossible for the supermarket to offer fresh products this week, apart from fruits and vegetables and frozen foods. According to West France, store management hopes to restart some of its fresh departments from Friday. A strange climate for the store’s customers.

Asked by the daily, some of them especially struggle to understand why tons of food had to be thrown away after the fire. The reason given by the store manager is simple: the cold chain has been broken. “For health reasons”, all the fresh products that were on the shelves or in the storage spaces had to be thrown away.

This represents about five dumpsters, or several tens of tons of food that have been wasted, specifies West France. The fire, which did not cause any injuries, is believed to be of accidental origin.
