Tobogganing south of Munich: Eleven great routes for sledding – Munich

Wallberg

At 6.5 kilometers, the toboggan run on Wallberg is considered the longest natural toboggan run in Germany. During the approximately 30-minute descent you cover a total of 825 meters in altitude. The route is steeper in the upper area and posters warn of tight curves. You have to brake hard, especially before a few hairpin bends. At the bottom, however, the sleigh drivers can let their vehicle run against it. Can sled at the valley station be borrowed.

Riederstein

The Riederstein toboggan run has the advantage for hikers that they can warm up in a mountain inn before whizzing down into the valley (you can find the opening times here). A chapel sits 150 meters above the inn and offers a great view over Lake Tegernsee. The path there can be walked in winter, but it is not marked. Tobogganing is not possible from there.

Then back from the inn on the 1.7 kilometer long, mostly cleared forest road. It takes just under an hour to climb the 280 meters in altitude, but only ten minutes to go down. The toboggan run can be slippery in some places and, due to the gradient, is more suitable for families with older children. There is no possibility of renting sledges at the inn.

Hirschberg

The toboggan run on the Hirschberg near Kreuth can’t quite compete with the neighboring peak, the Wallberg, with its 6.5 kilometer long descent. But at least five kilometers and 600 meters of altitude difference await the sled driver. There is no climbing aid in the form of a lift. From the Kreuth district of Scharling you take the forest road to Hirschlache, which can be reached after one and a half to two hours. The toboggan run begins here and takes between 20 and 30 minutes.

Denkalm

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle at Brauneck, you can do so in Lenggries Denkalm tackle on the other side of the valley. This excursion destination offers sledders two options for descending: the same route as the ascent, or you cover another 100 meters in altitude from the hut towards Keilkopf until you reach a forest road. This is less steep and therefore easier for children to master.

The starting point is a parking lot in Bachmaiergasse near the Isarwellenbad. The 300-meter climb to the Denkalm takes 45 minutes, and the descent from there takes ten minutes. There is no sledge rental there, but there is one at “Lenggries” ski school in the Draxlhanglifthaus (08042/3636). The illuminated toboggan run from the Obere Firstalm down to the Spitzingsee with a height difference of around 270 meters has a decisive advantage: while at lower altitudes the piste operators often still struggle to turn the few flakes into a tobogganable route, here, 200 meters higher, it is usually possible a lot of snow.

And there is another reason why the Obere Firstalm attracts many families: the gradient of the forest road, which begins at the Spitzingsattel, is moderate and therefore easy for children to manage. In three quarters of an hour the hiker reaches the mountain inn, where sledges can also be rented. You can cover the 2.5 kilometers down in about a quarter of an hour. There is also moonlight tobogganing; You can check whether the railway is open here experience.

The ascent and descent are on the same road, so caution is advised. Alternatively, sledders can also take a hiking trail to the Lower Firstalm and then continue to the Upper Firstalm.

Hörnle

A 4.5 kilometer long tobogganing experience is possible on the natural toboggan run on the Hörnle near Bad Kohlgrub. The upper area in particular is challenging with its gradient, but further down the descent on the wide forest road is more relaxed. A total of 550 meters of altitude difference is overcome, and the descent takes around 15 minutes. If you want to save yourself the hour and a half climb, take it the mountain railway – However, it is currently blocked due to an audit. If necessary, sledges can also be rented at the valley station.

It takes two to two and a half hours to get from Oberammergau to the (closed in winter) August Schuster House to climb on the Pürschling. A five-kilometer-long, unprepared descent awaits the toboggan driver up there, on which you can cover the almost 750 meters in altitude to the parking lot at the end of the lift path in Unterammergau in about 30 minutes. Since the toboggan run is also used for the ascent, tobogganers have to watch out for oncoming sledders and ski tourers.

A classic is the toboggan run from the St. Martins Hut on the Grasberg down to the Bayernhalle in the municipality of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. There are not many routes that combine a comparatively short ascent time (just under an hour) with a beautiful, not too steep descent (two and a half kilometers long) and such a brilliant view of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Wetterstein Mountains.

You can usually see what the snow conditions are like on the toboggan run St. Martin’s Hut Call 08821/4970 – but it will be closed until December 21st due to company holidays. The descent down the 300 meters altitude takes about ten minutes.

Eckbauer

The large ski jump is of course one of the landmarks of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Right next to it is the valley station of the Eckbauerbahn, which you can either take up to the starting point or walk the sleigh route high. Toboggans can be rented from the Eckbauerbahn either in the valley or at the mountain station.

You can find more toboggan runs in the Bavarian foothills of the Alps here.
