To the illustrator Morris on his 100th birthday: The man who drew more precisely than his shadow – culture

Morris, the creator of the “poor lonesome cowboy” Lucky Luke, would have been 100 years old on December 1st.

It is his trademark and unique selling point: Lucky Luke is the only western hero, oh what, the only person ever, who can draw a weapon faster than his shadow. The Belgian illustrator Morris invented the cowboy, as well as the ingenious parody of this original Western scene that adorns the back of every “Lucky Luke” album: the cowboy’s shootout with himself striking shadows (the bow legs! the quiff! the hat!) on a wooden wall opposite. The shadow man still has the revolver in his holster.
