To offset its carbon footprint, the Trans Musicales open a kitty

“Let’s decarbonize culture! “. The message is signed by the think thank The Shift Project which published at the end of November a study on the climate impact of festivals, pointing in particular to the race for gigantism in which certain organizers have embarked. At the Trans Musicales de Rennes, this ecological awareness goes back several years. From 2004, the year the Trans moved to the Parc Expo, shuttles were set up from the city centre. In 2008, reusable cups made their appearance at the festival. The Trans continued their commitment last year by banning red meat from the dishes served and drastically reducing meat products.

Despite all its efforts, the musical event continues to pollute, with the main source being the transport of artists and festival-goers. “We calculated that this represented approximately 750 tonnes of CO2”, underlines Xavier Paillat, sustainable and solidarity development manager. At a rate of 80 euros per tonne, the carbon footprint of the festival is thus assessed at 60,000 euros.

The public invited to contribute

A sum that the Trans Musicales will precisely seek to raise for their 44th edition in order to “commit to the height of our emissions”. Everyone will be called upon to finance this environmental kitty, starting with the Association Trans Musicales which will pay 10,000 euros to the pot. Festival-goers will also be able to take part in the project by offering, for example, the deposit euro for their cup or by donating part or all of the amount remaining on their cashless.

The money raised will then be donated to the associations Terre de liens, which supports the creation of organic farms, and Compagnons Bâtisseurs Bretagne, which fights against fuel poverty in housing. Part of the money raised will also be invested with Énergie Partagée, an organization that supports and finances citizen projects for the production of 100% renewable energy in France.

Uyghur acid techno and Colombian psychedelia

The 44 edition of Trans Musicales will be held from December 7 to 11 in Rennes. As every year, the program will be cosmopolitan and eclectic. We will be able to discover on stage Uyghur acid techno (None Sounds), Maloya rock from Réunion (Mouvman Alé), Faroese pop rock (Koboykex), Colombian psychedelia (Combo Chimbita) or even some local artists like Beau Bandit , Jeanne Bonjour or Mowdee.
