To better aim for 2031, South Africa withdraws its candidacy for 2027

South Africa ultimately does not feel ready to organize the Women’s Football World Cup in 2027. Pretoria announced on Saturday that it was withdrawing its candidacy, preferring to avoid showing a “presentation made in haste” to Fifa in December .

The deadline for submitting precise plans from candidates to host this competition has been set for December 8 by the International Football Federation. “We felt it was better to present a better prepared bid for 2031,” said South African Football Federation head Lydia Monyepao.

The choice for 2027 known next May

After this withdrawal, three candidates remain in the running to host the 2027 World Cup: one submitted by Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany; another from the United States and Mexico; and finally, one from Brazil.

The choice of the country(ies) selected will be made during the FIFA congress organized next May in Bangkok. The last Women’s World Cup was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand in the summer of 2023 and was won by Spain.
