Leo Neugebauer justifies his role as one of the favorites at the start of the decathlon at the World Championships and raises hopes of a medal. In the long jump and shot put he is in a class of his own.

The German record holder After three disciplines, Leo Neugebauer has taken the lead in the decathlon at the World Championships in Athletics in Budapest.

After a good 100-meter race, the 23-year-old managed the first eight-meter long jump of his career and a personal best in the shot put. Neugebauer celebrated his previous appearance in the World Cup stadium with corresponding euphoria.

With 2908 points, the best of the year is clearly ahead of Canadian Olympic champion Damian Warner, who has collected 2812 points so far. Third is Warner’s compatriot Pierce Lepage with 2784 points. Manuel Eitel from Ulm is eleventh with 2616 points, European champion and former world champion Niklas Kaul is 19th with 2446 points. However, Kaul may have problems with his left hip. This was indicated by his father Michael on ARD. The strong disciplines of the Mainzer only come on the second day.

Neugebauer was the first to provide the celebrated moments. In the last attempt he jumped 8.00 meters for the first time. In the shot put, he managed 17.04 meters in his first attempt, putting him more than a meter further than the closest competitor. Neugebauer, who is studying in the USA, sprinted the 100 meters in 10.69 seconds.

The high jump and the 400 meters are still on the program this evening.
