Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is out Friday. The character Tiny Tina also has a connection to Lisa Simpson.

The “Borderlands” series is known for its sometimes crude humor, unexpected ideas and wacky characters like Tiny Tina. The character was first seen in 2012 as a 13-year-old explosives expert in the second part. Less than a year later, she got the download extension “Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep” named after her, which was re-released again in 2021 as a stand-alone game.

As the game master, the overexcited Tina led through adventures in the fictional pen-and-paper role-playing game “Bunkers & Badasses”. Developer Gearbox Software and publisher 2K are building on this and releasing the “Borderlands” spin-off “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands” for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S on March 25th. And the video game also has an unexpected connection to the “Simpsons.”

Tiny Tina has that in common with Lisa from the “Simpsons”.

One is shrill, causes chaos and madness, likes explosives and sugar. The other is highly intelligent, a vegetarian and a star student. But Tiny Tina and Lisa Simpson from the cult animated series have one thing in common.

Both characters are spoken in German by the voice actress, author and actress Sabine Bohlmann (53). She has been dubbing Lisa since the 1990s and has lent her voice to Moaning Myrtle from “Harry Potter” and Pikachu in the “Pokémon” series, among others.

Bohlmann appreciates one thing in particular about Tiny Tina, as she reveals in an interview with 2K: “I love that it’s the craziest character I’ve ever spoken and probably will ever speak. […] Sometimes Tina screams, sometimes she’s quiet, sometimes she’s totally crazy, sometimes a small child. Her personality pretty much sums it all up.”

But the dubbing actress sees parallels to Lisa: “Sometimes she also has moments when she gets a little crazy. For example, when she’s completely desperate because her family doesn’t see how intelligent she is. Sometimes Lisa just goes crazy and that’s exactly when she also has a bit of Tiny Tina.”

Wacky fantasy adventures with friends

In an action-packed experience between shooter, role-playing game, magic, madness and lots of loot, things should go haywire again in “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands”. Players can choose their character from multiple classes, including Killomancer and Brr-Serker.

You then plunge into the fantasy spin-off alone or with up to three friends. There they meet characters like Queen Asshorse, who the creators say is “the smartest, most beautiful, most perfect ruler of all time”. It should be clear that players shouldn’t take their foray into Tiny Tina’s digital pen-and-paper role-playing game too seriously. The 13 year old is at least looking forward to the session: “We’re playing ‘Bunkers & Badasses’, baby!”
