The summer of 2023 gives us rain instead of sun. No wonder Tiktok Sunset lamps are making waves. Supposedly they simulate the atmosphere of a sunset in the bedroom or living room. Whether that works, he has star tried out.

It doesn’t feel like a week goes by in which TikTok is not being hailed as a new gadget. Sunset lamps are almost a thing of the past. Videos celebrating the light sources have been popping up again and again for about two years. They do nothing more than create a circular, particularly warm light. In the upright short videos, however, it looks really comfortable, as this work proves:

Just right to escape the constant rain in summer 2023. And the fun is not particularly expensive either. At Amazon, the lamps usually cost between 13 and 20 euros. Interested parties can choose between two types: Either they rely on Sunset lamps with templates or on a lamp with an LED bulb. The advantage of LED sunset lamps is, of course, that they change color at the touch of a button.

Sunset lamp under 20 euros

Because we don’t feel like fiddling with stencils, we opt for an LED model with a USB connection and remote control, which costs just under 20 euros and has received above-average reviews. manufacturer of these Sunset lamp is Aygo – never heard of, never seen before. Nevertheless, the processing of the lamp works well. The base is heavy and offers a secure footing. The head of the lamp can be moved easily. Nice!

Unfortunately it works Remote control simply cheap, which in itself would not be a problem. However, it doesn’t work properly. A small piece of plastic blocks the button battery’s circuitry to the remote control. Of course that has to be settled. We did, but unfortunately the remote control doesn’t work.

Maybe the battery is empty. Once changed, still nothing happens. A closer look at the remote control reveals that it is a cheap circuit board with “buttons” stuck on it in the form of a sticker.

The circuit board underneath is very dirty. So peel off the sticker, clean the circuit board with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry, stick the sticker back on and lo and behold: a few buttons work now. Sometimes anyway. If you hold the remote control about ten centimeters in front of the lamp’s infrared interface and you’re very lucky. It’s not really that far away.

Once switched on, the second disappointment sets in. The lamp is too weak for daylight. That’s just about bearable, after all there is neither a sunrise nor a sunset in daylight. However, it is unforgivable that the lamp keeps resetting itself when it is switched off. Because quite a few users should be interested in hanging the Sunset lamp on a smart socket to be woken up with the warm light.

That is not possible with this model. If we set the lamp to orange and turn it off, it will change back to a cold shade of blue the next time we turn it on. In addition, it does not come with a power adapter to use it away from the computer. We therefore have to repurpose an old Samsung power supply.

So much for the negative. The light effect is positive when it gets dark and the remote control is doing its job. The atmosphere of a Sunset lamp is impressive and yes, it feels relaxing to listen to music or indulge in your favorite series in the warm cone of light.

Unfortunately, however, the Sunset lamp does not provide enough light to be able to read properly, at least when it comes to a printed book. To read comfortably in the light of a sunset, you need a device with a backlight, i.e. a smartphone, tablet or e-book reader.

Conclusion

Sunset lamps are said to create a feel-good atmosphere in the home, thereby reducing stress and anxiety. The tested lamp was not able to do this in daylight. In the dark, however, she convinces. The lamp creates a very nice atmosphere, even if you expect a little more after various Tiktok videos. It should be said that the position of the lamp determines how good the effect of the sunset is. Sometimes it just takes time to find the perfect alignment. And on TikTok we always see the perfect position.

Unfortunately, the supplied remote control was of such abysmal quality that it was frustrating to use. Anyway: Anyone who triggers so much stress when switching on a simple lamp can claim with a clear conscience that it relieves it – if it is then switched on. If you’ve got a taste for it, you’d better grab another Sunset lamp.

Preferably one where the colors can be changed without a cheap remote control and which draws its power from batteries or a normal mains plug. A suitable sunset lamp would probably be this one Model by GreatPro, which connects to your home network and can be controlled using Alexa voice commands. The rest of the operation is possible via the associated app. It should always work better than the Aygo remote control.
