Are the days of short videos on TikTok soon over? Certain users are currently testing the longest video duration yet on the platform.

Social media giant TikTok is currently testing 15-minute videos. This is reported by the industry magazine “TechCrunch,” among others, citing a personal confirmation from TikTok. However, the video function is initially only available to selected users in certain regions. The company wants to check how the increased video duration is received in the TikTok community.

Social media expert Matt Navarra was the first to report on the new feature on October 23rd after he saw it on TikTok. On a screenshot, which he publishes via the meta network service Threads, he shares TikTok’s challenge to test the 15-minute video upload. This is possible both via the app and on the desktop.

It is unclear until when the test phase will run. It is also not certain whether TikTok will finally implement the 15-minute videos. In the past, test runs for longer videos have proven successful. Just last year, the social media platform increased the video duration to ten minutes. TikTok thus offers users the opportunity to upload more detailed advice videos, tutorials or recipe ideas.

TikTok and YouTube are becoming more and more similar

Since TikTok’s biggest competitor YouTube established a function for short videos with YouTube Shorts in 2020, the two portals have become more and more similar. TikTok became famous in 2016 with 15-second videos – followed by minutes and perhaps even hours in the future? Videos lasting several hours are not unusual on YouTube, but the platform has so far been able to differentiate itself well from its social media competitors.
