Tiger Woods announces that he has undergone new leg surgery

A little over a week after his retirement from the Augusta Masters, where he revealed that he was again suffering from foot pain, Tiger Woods underwent further surgery on his right leg on Wednesday. This same leg which had suffered multiple fractures during his serious car accident in early 2021.

A statement, posted on his Twitter account, said Tiger underwent “a subtalar fusion procedure to treat his post-traumatic arthritis from a previous talar fracture.” This joint is located just below the ankle joint and a fusion can provide pain relief. “Tiger is now recovering and looking forward to beginning his rehabilitation,” according to the statement, which did not specify the duration of his unavailability.

Tiger Woods, 47, had appeared limping low several times in Augusta, also not helped by the very wet weather conditions. During his car accident on February 23, 2021 near Los Angeles, he had suffered several open fractures in his legs, especially the right, the most damaged, which gave little hope for the continuation of his career. Since then, he has participated in only five tournaments, and finished only twice. The next major tournament, the PGA Championship at Oak Hill, is scheduled for May 18-21.
