Even though romantic comedies are in trouble these days, George Clooney and Julia Roberts land a surprise hit.

George Clooney (61) and Julia Roberts (54) apparently continue to guarantee success at the box office. Their joint film “Ticket to Paradise” has according to a report by the industry magazine “Variety” already grossed $60 million. The domestic market is not even included, because in the USA and Canada the romantic comedy does not start in cinemas until October 21st.

According to Universal Pictures, “Ticket to Paradise” is more successful than films like “The Lost City” with Sandra Bullock (58), “Last Christmas” or “Crazy Rich” were at a comparable time after the cinema release. In Germany, the romantic comedy has earned the equivalent of around 7.4 million dollars since it started on September 15th.

Julia Roberts and George Clooney play a divorced couple who travel to Bali together in the film. There, her daughter wants to marry a man she has only known for a short time. Her parents want to prevent her from making the same mistake she once made.

Romantic comedy in crisis

The success of “Ticket to Paradise” cannot be taken for granted. Because the genre of romantic comedy has been in crisis for a long time. “Bros” recently flopped at the box office in the USA. “The Lost City”, on the other hand, was a surprising success, while “Last Christmas” was rather disappointing, and not just in the eyes of the critics. Many romantic comedies no longer start in the cinema at all, but come directly to streaming services.

Romantic comedies experienced their last wedding in the late 1990s, with films like “My Best Friend’s Wedding” or “Notting Hill”. Star of the films mentioned: Julia Roberts.
