Thuringia: These are the scariest places to be scary

They are located in the middle of Germany: the Lost Places in Thuringia. Because many old and lonely large buildings in this state did not find any potential investors after the fall of the Wall. Instead of revitalizing the historic buildings with new ideas, they have been more or less left to their own devices for years.

The paint has long since peeled off and nature has reclaimed the buildings. Ivy not only grows up facades, but also grows indoors. Moisture penetrates walls and ceilings and causes them to collapse. The wind blows through the broken windows.

The author duo Arno Specht and Uwe Schimunek, who have already published several books about scary places, such as “Ghost Sites – Forgotten Places in Saxony”, do not shy away from taking risks on their discovery tours. This requires a very special instinct, extremely good local knowledge and a generous portion courage necessary.

Caution: entry prohibited

Because encroaching on restricted properties and penetrating buildings that are at risk of collapsing can be dangerous. The adventurers have to be careful of rotten ceilings and climb stairs, the steps of which may lead nowhere.

Both have also presented another volume in which 14 forgotten places in Thuringia are presented. In recent years, the Lost Places professionals have roamed through dozens of empty hotels, clinics, residential buildings and industrial facilities in Thuringia and published their discoveries in words and pictures.

On the following page of the photo series we show atmospheric pictures from the volume “Ghost Sites – Forgotten Places in Thuringia“, which was published by Jaron Verlag.
