Thunderstorm over Grasbrunn – District of Munich

People and nature in the district of Munich got away with a black eye on Monday evening. Bright flashes of lightning flashed across the night sky, as here over Grasbrunn, but the heavy rain and hailstorms announced by the weather service largely did not materialize. Only in the south of the district, south of Schäftlarn, did the storm knock down a few trees or break off branches. A rail replacement service had to be set up on the S-Bahn line towards Wolfratshausen by Tuesday afternoon. In Grasbrunn, where the photo was taken, there was strong wind and rain. As a result, Tuesday brought a welcome cooling down for people and nature before the temperatures rose again this Wednesday. The spectacular picture is due to a weather situation that occurs much more frequently in summer than at other times of the year: when humid, warm and cold air currents meet, static tension builds up in the sky, which is discharged in lightning. The temperature there can reach 30,000 degrees Celsius – slightly higher than the current 30 degrees down on Earth.
