Three dead in the fire of a building partly squatted



Three people died in the fire of a building belonging to a social landlord but partly squatted in a deprived area in Marseille, police confirmed to 20 minutes, this Saturday.

The fire started in the common areas in the early morning hours. Trapped by the flames, four people jumped, three died, according to a police source. Two other people were injured, an adult and a child, and eight people were intoxicated, added the prefecture to 20 minutes.

Tensions between the police and residents

The tragedy caused tensions on the spot with the inhabitants but around 9:30 am calm had returned, according to the police.

The “Les Flamants” residence, built in 1972, is owned by 13 Habitat, which presents itself as the first HLM office in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region with 33,500 managed housing units.
