“Thor: Love and Thunder” starts with top numbers. Only two films made more money on their first weekend this year.

Strong theatrical start for “Thor: Love and Thunder”: The fourth solo film of the Nordic god embodied by Chris Hemsworth (38) played at the weekend according to “Variety” 302 million US dollars (around 298 million euros) worldwide.

The latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe fetched 143 million dollars (around 141 million euros) in the USA alone. “Thor 4” earned the remaining $159 million (around 157 million euros) outside the United States – although it has not (yet) been released in cinemas in France, China and Russia. According to Variety, the film exceeds the expectations of Marvel and its parent company Walt Disney Pictures.

Only two films started better in the US cinema year 2022. An in-house Marvel competitor occupies the top spot: “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” with 187 million dollars (around 185 million euros). In second place is “Jurassic World: A New Age” with 145 million dollars (around 143 million euros).

“Thor: Love and Thunder” is by far the strongest start of all four films with the thunder god. Compared to all films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film with Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman (41) ranks 11th.
