Thomas Hitzlsperger: Ex-national player on homosexuality in football

Thomas Hitzlsperger came out as homosexual ten years ago. To date, no top German footballer has followed him. How can that be? A conversation about fears of coming out, inflationary rainbow campaigns and the double standards of football.

Mister Hitzlsperger, you came out as gay ten years ago. To date, you are the only top German footballer who is openly gay. Why doesn’t anyone follow you?
I was hoping that my story would encourage one or two players. However, fears about going outside and opening up still seem to prevail. But this is a social problem, not one of football alone. I’ve heard many stories over the past decade from people outside of sports who are struggling with the decision of whether or not to come out.

Are you disappointed that your coming out didn’t make more difference in football?
I wanted to start a discussion, and I succeeded. What has been missing are players who are committed.

Have players contacted you and asked for advice about coming out?
In all these years: not a single one.
