Only in the summer did Thomas Helmer leave the “one-two-pass” as a moderator, now he is returning to the football talk as a substitute.

That was quick: In the summer of 2021, Thomas Helmer (56) hung up the microphone as the moderator for the “double pass”. On this Sunday, November 14th, the ex-national player is again host of the lunchtime football regulars table of Sport1.

The comeback of the ex-footballer, who was the sole moderator of the panel from 2015 to 2021, will probably remain a one-off affair. Helmer represents the sick Florian König (54), who succeeded him as a presenter in the summer.

König has been out for health reasons since mid-September. So far he has been represented by Rudi Brückner (66), who was the first moderator of “Doppelpass” from 1995 to 2004.

Thomas Helmer: From footballer to moderator

After his successful career as a footballer, Thomas Helmer switched to sports journalism. After the first steps on Sat.1, the European champion from 1996 hosted various formats on Sport.1. At the “Doppelpass”, Helmer, who wanted to become a journalist even before his football career, was first an expert and presenter on his behalf, and from 2015 he was the successor of Jörg Wontorra (72) as presenter.

In the summer of 2021, Helmer, who lives with his wife Yasmina Filali (46) and two children in Hamburg and commutes to Munich for broadcasts every Sunday, announced his departure from the “Doppelpass”. He wants to have more time for the family and other projects. At Sport1 he continues to moderate, for example the live broadcasts of the DFB Cup.

So now the lightning comeback with “Doppelpass”. Together with co-presenter Jana Wosnitza (28), Helmer welcomes ex-Leverkusen manager Reiner Calmund (72) and ex-national player Inka Grings (43) on Sunday.
