Another ESC has passed, again Germany brings up the rear. Can this be done properly? Thomas Gottschalk says what some ESC fans have been thinking for a long time.
The next ESC failure for Germany: Lord of the Lost only reached last place with their song “Blood & Glitter” at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) on May 13th. After the failures of the past few years, this was probably foreseeable for some in advance. Michael Schulte was able to take fourth place in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2018, but Germany has been hanging around at the bottom end of the points table for about a decade. Thomas Gottschalk feels “cheated”
“With all love, but we are now being fooled by the rest of Europe when it comes to the rating at the ESC,” says the 72-year-old. “They just don’t like us. The soft Malik [Anm. d. Red.: Malik Harris trat 2022 für Deutschland an.] they sawed us away just like the rocking Lord of the Lost.” But the band was “far too nice” during their performance. “If it’s heavy metal, then it has to rattle.” According to the moderator, ARD had to “after these simply turn off the money supply to all bankruptcies”.
In the meantime, the ARD is apparently doing research into the causes. “We started with an extraordinary act that didn’t achieve the result we wanted at all,” Andreas Gerling, head of the ARD team for the ESC at NDR, was quoted as saying in a press release. “It’s very, very disappointing and sobering. In the selection process, we had opted for expanding the musical genres. We must and will now face the discussion and consideration as to why this title did not catch on with the ESC either.”

Yesterday, Saturday, was also the farewell for Peter Urban. For the 25th and last time, the presenter commented on the ESC evening on TV. “Peter Urban couldn’t have found a better exit, he did everything right,” Gottschalk said.
He also wants to have found a possible successor for Urban. “My sincere request to those responsible: Make Constantin Zöller from SWR his successor. I recognize radio talent when I hear it. He is one!” In addition, the moderator published a photo montage of Zöller next to Urban. Gottschalk really needs to know. In the past few decades he has made a career not only on TV, but also on radio.
